Another of California’s Medi-Cal plans — and the same test, run again. We searched Liberty Dental’s “Find a Dentist” tool for a prosthodontist in the Sacramento area. It returned seven. On closer examination, those seven collapse into two providers — and neither one appears to be a prosthodontist at all.
About this page. Liberty Dental is a separate Medi-Cal dental plan from Health Net / DentaQuest, but it operates under the same State rules. We ran the identical, reproducible check we ran on Health Net’s directory — and found the same kind of phantom specialist, just arranged differently.
Everything below comes from sources any member of the public can verify: Liberty Dental’s own “Find a Dentist” tool, the federal NPI registry, the California Dental Board (DCA) license records, and the providers’ own clinic directories. We do not name the individual dentists; the issue here is the , not the people.

Seven listings, two providers, zero verified prosthodontists
1. The search: seven results that collapse to two
Open Liberty Dental’s “Find a Dentist” tool, set the location to Sacramento and the specialty to Prosthodontist, and you are shown seven Sacramento-area prosthodontists who accept Liberty Dental. Look closely, though, and those seven listings are really just two distinct people:
- One is listed at six “WellSpace Health” locations.
- The other is listed at a single Sacramento-area Western Dental.
Six plus one is the “seven.” And here is the catch: both of these Liberty-listed “prosthodontists” carry an NPI taxonomy of General Dentist — the federal code that classifies what a provider is actually credentialed to do. We found no evidence that either one holds a prosthodontist credential.
What an “NPI taxonomy” is
Every U.S. provider has a federal NPI number with a taxonomy code that states their specialty. General Dentistry and Prosthodontics are different codes. A directory can label someone a “prosthodontist,” but the provider’s own NPI taxonomy is the objective record of what they actually are.
2. So we did what we always do — we checked every public source
When a directory makes a claim, we verify it against everything a member of the public can independently check. Here is what each source returned for Liberty Dental’s two “prosthodontists.”
3. Provider A — the “WellSpace Health” listing (six locations)
Liberty Dental lists this provider as a prosthodontist across six WellSpace Health locations. But the provider cannot be found by name in WellSpace Health’s own “Find a Provider” portal. We tabbed through WellSpace’s entire directory — all 141 providers — and the person Liberty marks as a “prosthodontist” does not appear in WellSpace’s own directory at all.
What we can — and can’t — say here
We’re careful with this one. We don’t know exactly what that means, and we can’t say whether this provider practices at any of the locations Liberty lists, or precisely how WellSpace’s provider lookup works. WellSpace’s website appears to let you view all of its providers across all locations — but we could be wrong about that. What we can say is simply this: by name, this Liberty-listed prosthodontist is not in WellSpace’s own provider directory.
4. Provider B — the Western Dental listing (one location)
Liberty Dental lists the second “prosthodontist” at a Sacramento-area Western Dental. But according to Western Dental’s own official provider roster for that location, he is not there. So we searched the Western Dental provider directory for his NPI number directly. It returned four locations spread across the Central Valley — in Lodi, Stockton, and Manteca — where he is listed as a General Dentist. His NPI taxonomy confirms General Dentistry, not prosthodontics.
The bottom line
We’re left with the same open question we had with Health Net: why does Liberty Dental’s “Find a Dentist” return two prosthodontists for the Sacramento area when every official public source we can check returns the same answer — they are not prosthodontists by NPI taxonomy, and they are not always listed on the official chain-location directories where Liberty says they practice as one? We can’t read anyone’s intent. We can only report what the public record shows.
The same pattern, a second plan
Two different Medi-Cal dental plans — Health Net / DentaQuest and Liberty Dental — and the same result: a directory that surfaces a “prosthodontist” the underlying records don’t support. That is the textbook shape of a , and it is exactly why the State’s time-or-distance and standards exist.
