California’s own DHCS Medi-Cal Provider Directory points members to Western Dental for a prosthodontist across Sacramento County. We pulled Western Dental’s own provider directory — every dentist across all 17 area listings. Prosthodontists found: zero.
The contradiction
If you are on Medi-Cal and you do what you’re told — go to the State’s own provider lookup and search for a prosthodontist near Sacramento — the website hands you a list of Western Dental offices and leads you to believe a prosthodontist is waiting at each one. So we went and checked the providers who actually practice there.
Search the State of California’s DHCS Medi-Cal Provider Directory by the specialty “Prosthodontist” in the Sacramento area, and it returns Western Dental locations across the county — presenting each as a place a Medi-Cal member can go to see a prosthodontist.
To a member, that reads as a simple promise: your specialist is in-network, and there are plenty of them nearby.
We pulled Western Dental’s own provider directory — the full roster of every practicing dentist across all 17 directory listings in the Sacramento area (Sacramento, Carmichael, and Rancho Cordova), as it stood on its June 18, 2026 update.
We read all 92 listings and counted the prosthodontists: 0. Not one — at any location. (There are also no endodontists and no periodontists listed anywhere in the set.)
The open question we can’t answer — but someone can
How can the State’s website show a prosthodontist at every Western Dental when Western Dental’s own roster shows none? One plausible explanation: the State may simply display the data that insurance plans and clinics submit to it — publishing those submissions without independently verifying that the listed specialist actually practices at the listed office. If that’s how it works, an inaccurate submission becomes an official-looking State listing.
We don’t know that for certain — and we won’t assert intent we can’t prove. But it is exactly the kind of question that oversight exists to answer, and someone at DHCS, the plan, or the clinic does know. If you can document how these listings are sourced and checked, tell us.
How we checked (reproducible)
For each of the 17 Western Dental directory listings we captured Western Dental’s provider-directory listing of every dentist and their listed role (General, Orthodontist, Oral Surgeon, Exodontist, Pedodontist, or Implants), then searched the whole set for any provider tagged as a prosthodontist. The location-by-location result is published in full below — nothing is summarized away.
Why this is not harmless
This isn’t a hypothetical. On Reddit’s r/Sacramento, a member of the public posted a thread titled “Every single prosthodontist covered by Medi-Cal in [the Sacramento area]” — and, going off the State’s directory, listed those Western Dental offices believing a prosthodontist was genuinely available at each one. The poster wasn’t careless; they trusted the official source and reached the conclusion the official source was built to produce.
A public example of the directory doing its damage
A Sacramento resident, relying on the State’s Medi-Cal provider lookup, came away believing prosthodontists were available at those Western Dental locations — the same locations whose own rosters list none. That is the harm in one screenshot: a member can’t tell a real specialist from a listing, because the page that misleads them is the government’s.

It connects directly to the plan’s machine-readable file, which carried a single, stale “prosthodontist” listing at one Western Dental (WSO). The State’s directory goes further — turning a phantom into a countywide list. A member chasing that list spends weeks on the phone, gets sent to offices that don’t have the specialist, and still has no appointment.

Below is the full set. The matrix shows, at a glance, which specialties each office actually has. Note the Prosthodontist column on the right: it is a solid column of ✕ — there isn’t one anywhere.
17 listings, but only 10 actual offices
Western Dental lists its orthodontics under a separate code at the same street address as a general office, so the 17 directory entries below are really 10 physical locations. Three Sacramento pairs share a building (WEH + OEH, WNT + ONA, WSO + OSS), both Carmichael codes are one office (BAR + OAR, 7141 Fair Oaks Blvd), and all four Rancho Cordova codes are a single address — 10321 Folsom Blvd, Suite A (WFL, WRH, OFL, ORH). The real network is even smaller than 17 entries suggest — and not one of the 10 offices has a prosthodontist.

A note on the providers: we are not characterizing any individual dentist. Every name above is reproduced exactly as Western Dental’s own directory lists it, with the role Western Dental assigned. The issue documented here is the directory — the gap between what the State’s site tells members and who is actually listed as practicing — not the dentists.
What the addresses — and the systems — actually show
Push on the State’s list and two things surface. Neither one points to a prosthodontist hiding at one of these offices. Both point to directories that were never built to show one.
The address says “Western Dental.” The door often says something else.
Run the State’s “Prosthodontist within 25 miles of Sacramento” search and it returns 16 Western Dental addresses — the 10 we verified among them. But search those street addresses one by one and several don’t resolve to the Western Dental storefront the State names. They turn out to be a different, affiliated clinic: an Access Dental office (Western Dental Services, Inc.’s Medi-Cal brand), a HALO community clinic sharing the suite, a Western Dental listing marked permanently closed, or — in one case — an unrelated practice the State appears to have mislabeled as Western Dental, down to borrowing another office’s phone number.
Same parent company, a different sign over the door. It changes the storefront; it does not change the answer. Not one of them lists a prosthodontist either.
So the bottom line holds at every door we opened — corporate Western Dental or affiliated brand alike. In Western Dental’s own provider directory, the number of prosthodontists at every Sacramento-area location reads the same: 0.
The deeper problem: the systems can’t even say “prosthodontist”
Western Dental’s own directory sorts every dentist into a fixed set of roles — General, Orthodontist, Oral Surgeon, Exodontist, Pediatric, Implants. “Prosthodontist” isn’t one of the choices. And it isn’t only Western Dental: the plan-side member search tools — Health Net and DentaQuest — don’t offer Prosthodontist as a selectable specialty at all.
Sit with what that means. If a prosthodontist genuinely practices at a Sacramento-area Western Dental, the systems a member actually uses have no field to record them and no filter to find them. They were never entered, can’t be searched, and can’t be booked — a by design, even as the State’s directory keeps promising one is waiting at every location.
Why this matters
Whether it’s the plan’s list or the State’s, a exists so members can find real, reachable care. A listing that sends you to an office with no such specialist is the textbook .
Under DHCS’s Medi-Cal rules, specialty dentists must sit within of the member. “Listed everywhere, available nowhere” doesn’t meet that — it hides the gap. See the dental rules →
When there truly is no in-network specialist, the member’s route is out-of-network care — for example a . A phantom directory listing blocks that route by pretending the specialist is already there. The State’s own 2021 network certification confirms both points — it counts prosthodontists, and requires out-of-network access when a service isn’t available in network.
